Why Tamarindo Is Costa Rica's Best Fishing Charter Base

Tamarindo fishing charters put you closer to the action than any other Guanacaste departure point. Unlike destinations that require 2 hours just to reach deep water, Tamarindo sits near the continental shelf drop-off — meaning under an hour to blue water and more time with lines in the water fighting trophy fish. Whether you're after deep sea fishing or inshore species, Tamarindo delivers year-round.

Offshore Game

Battle acrobatic Pacific Sailfish, massive Blue and Black Marlin, fast Wahoo, and schools of Yellowfin Tuna in some of the richest waters in Central America.

  • Pacific Sailfish (peak Dec-Apr)
  • Blue & Black Marlin
  • Yellowfin Tuna & Wahoo
  • Mahi-Mahi (Dorado)

Inshore Treasures

Target the legendary Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, and aggressive Jack Crevalle along rocky reefs near Captain Island. Perfect for families and light-tackle enthusiasts.

  • Roosterfish (year-round)
  • Cubera Snapper
  • Jack Crevalle & Grouper
  • Sierra Mackerel

Tamarindo Fishing FAQ

How much does a Tamarindo fishing charter cost?
Tamarindo fishing charter prices range from $550 for a half-day reef trip to $1,400 for a full-day offshore expedition during peak season. Green season (May-Nov) offers lower rates starting at $550-$1,000. All prices include captain, crew, equipment, bait, and beverages. See our full pricing at /trips.
What is the best time to fish in Tamarindo, Costa Rica?
Tamarindo offers excellent fishing year-round. Peak sailfish and marlin season runs December through April with calm seas. May through November brings outstanding tuna, wahoo, and roosterfish action with fewer crowds and better rates. January through March is ideal for beginners thanks to calm conditions and consistent billfish action.
How do I board the boat in Tamarindo?
Tamarindo has no formal marina. Our crew meets you on the beach and a water taxi (panga) takes you to your charter boat anchored in the bay. The ride is about 2 minutes. Wear sandals or water shoes — your feet will get wet!
How far is deep water from Tamarindo?
Tamarindo sits near the continental shelf drop-off, so you can reach blue water in under an hour. This means more fishing time and less travel compared to other Costa Rica destinations.
What fish can I catch on a Tamarindo fishing charter?
Offshore: Pacific Sailfish, Blue and Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, and Wahoo. Inshore: Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Jack Crevalle, and Grouper along rocky reefs near Captain Island. Species availability varies by season.
Do you offer half-day deep sea fishing from Tamarindo?
Yes! We offer half-day (4 hours), three-quarter day (6 hours), and full-day (8+ hours) charters. Half-day trips are great for inshore fishing and families. For deep sea fishing targeting marlin and sailfish, we recommend a full-day trip to maximize your time in blue water.
What is included in the Tamarindo charter price?
All charters include a professional bilingual captain and crew, all fishing equipment and tackle, bait, ice, fish cleaning, water and soft drinks, and safety equipment. Fishing licenses and gratuity are not included.
How far is Tamarindo from Liberia airport?
Tamarindo is approximately 1 hour drive from Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. We can help coordinate airport transfers and recommend nearby accommodations.
