Fishing with Your Family in Tamarindo
Some of our favorite days on the water are family trips. There is something special about watching a 7-year-old reel in their first roosterfish, or seeing a teenager's eyes go wide when a jack crevalle explodes on the surface. Family fishing is not just about catching fish — it is about creating memories that last forever.
After thousands of family charters over 30 years, here is everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip with kids.
What Age Can Kids Start Fishing?
Ages 4-6: The "Helper" Stage
Very young children can come aboard, but set expectations appropriately. They will enjoy the boat ride, watching fish jump, seeing pelicans and dolphins, and "helping" reel when a fish is close to the boat. Keep trips short (3-4 hours max).
Ages 7-10: The "First Real Fish" Stage
This is the sweet spot for first fishing experiences. Kids this age can hold a rod, follow basic instructions, and fight inshore species with help from the crew. Their excitement is infectious. Half-day inshore trips are perfect.
Ages 11-14: The "I Got This" Stage
Pre-teens and young teens can handle their own rod, fight fish independently, and have the attention span for longer trips. They are old enough for half-day or even full-day charters depending on their interest level.
Ages 15+: Full Capability
Teenagers fish like adults. They can handle offshore trips, bigger species, and longer days. Many of our teen guests out-fish their parents.
Best Trip Types for Families
Half-Day Inshore (Recommended for Most Families)
- Duration: 4-5 hours
- Waters: Calm, close to shore (1-5 miles out)
- Species: Roosterfish, snapper, jack crevalle, sierra mackerel
- Why it works: Constant action, calm water, shorter duration, easier on young stomachs
- Seasickness risk: Very low
Combo Trip (For Active Families)
- Duration: 5-6 hours
- Waters: Inshore + nearshore reefs
- Species: Everything from inshore plus possible mahi-mahi
- Why it works: More variety without the long offshore run
- Seasickness risk: Low to moderate
Full-Day Offshore (For Fishing Families with Older Kids)
- Duration: 7-8 hours
- Waters: Open ocean, 20-40 miles out
- Species: Sailfish, tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi
- Why it works: Trophy fish potential, bucket-list experiences
- Seasickness risk: Moderate (assess carefully with kids)
How Our Crew Makes It Special for Kids
Our captains and mates love working with young anglers. Here is what we do differently on family trips:
- Kid-friendly tackle: Lighter rods sized for smaller hands
- Patient coaching: Step-by-step instruction, no pressure
- Action-focused spots: We target areas with consistent bites to keep kids engaged
- Wildlife spotting: We point out dolphins, sea turtles, rays, and birds between fish
- Celebration moments: Every fish a kid catches gets celebrated like a record-breaker
- Flexible pacing: If kids get tired, we adjust. No one is forced to fish
Tips for a Successful Family Trip
Before the Trip
- Explain what to expect — Show kids videos of fishing in Costa Rica so they are excited
- Seasickness prevention — Give kids Dramamine or natural ginger the night before
- Sun protection plan — Apply sunscreen at the hotel, pack extra. Kids burn fast
- Set expectations — "We might catch lots of fish, or we might catch a few. Either way, we are on a boat in the ocean and that is awesome."
During the Trip
- Let kids take breaks — They do not need to fish every second. Watching is fine
- Bring snacks they like — Familiar foods keep moods up
- Waterproof their electronics — If they want to film or play between fish, that is okay
- Rotate rod time — Everyone gets a turn when fish are biting
- Celebrate everything — The first fish, the biggest fish, the weirdest fish
After the Trip
- Cook your catch — Take fillets to a local restaurant. Kids love eating "their" fish
- Print a photo — Frame the best catch photo for their room
- Write it in a journal — Help kids record what they caught and how they felt
Species Kids Love Catching
| Species | Why Kids Love It | Fight Level | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack Crevalle | Explosive surface strikes, non-stop action | Medium | Inshore |
| Roosterfish | Cool looking, strong fighters, great photos | High | Inshore |
| Snapper | Easy to catch, can keep and eat | Easy-Medium | Inshore |
| Sierra Mackerel | Fast, shiny, bite often | Easy | Inshore |
| Mahi-Mahi | Beautiful colors, acrobatic, delicious | Medium-High | Nearshore |
| Yellowfin Tuna | Powerful fighters, great for eating | High | Offshore |

What to Bring for Kids

- Waterproof camera or phone case
- Seasickness medication (if prone to car sickness)

Pricing for Family Trips
Family trips are priced per boat, not per person. Whether you have 2 adults and 2 kids, or 2 adults and 4 kids, the charter rate is the same. This makes fishing one of the best family value activities in Tamarindo.
- Half-day inshore: $450-$900 (entire boat)
- That is just $75-$150 per person for a family of 6
